Was checking out NHL on the Fly this morning and realized that Doug Weight was in a Ducks Jersey. When did he get traded to the Ducks? I'm usually pretty good at keeping myself informed about trades that take place in the NHL, but this one caught me completely by surprise. I didn't even think that the Ducks would have the kind of cap space necessary to bring in a player like Weight and his 3.5 million dollar contract.

Andy Mac went to STL in exchange for Weight, 7th rounder and some prospect. That happaned 2-3 days ago.

The Ducks pulled this trade off to save cap space for next year as Doug Weight is a UFA and won't be back with the Ducks, where McDonald will be making $3.3M next year. As for this year, the Ducks are bringing in $200,000 more as Weight makes $3.5M and they still have to clear space for Niedermayer return.
The salary Burke saves next year will be used to try and sign Perry. If that happens time will only tell.
