I've been catching various hockey games over the last couple of weeks and have had a good chance to see most teams in action at one time or another. Anyhow, how good do you think Evgeni Malkin is going to be? I've been watching this guy play and he seems well on his way to being a star in the NHL. He's got a great hands, vision, and is certainly very strong on the puck considering he's only twenty-one years of age.
Who else in the NHL is going to be a star in your books, other then Malkin?

There are a lot of young guys out there that will be very good. I hate using the word star, or all-star or even franchise player as I feel it is used way too often in the NHL now.
I might be old school as I am use to saving those names for guys like Gretzky, Lemeiux, Yzerman, Messier, Coffey, Bourque....on the verge of coming into a league of their own are Crosby, Ovechkin, Kovalchuk, Nash just to name a few.
As for guys breaking into the NHL now, I would say that Kane, Toews, Gagner, Malkin, J. Staal, Frolov, Stastny, Kopitar will be the next group to have significant careers, to say that they will be great, or another star is still too early.
My personal favorites though are/will be, Dustin Byfuglien, Cam Barker, Bobby Ryan, Alex Bourret, Gilbert Brule, Tom Gilbert again to name a few. They won't turn anyones head, but will have long careers in the NHL.

In all honesty I believe Jordan Staal was hyped beyond his abilities because of Malkin and Crosby... don't get me wrong he's still a good hokcey player but he's definetely not at the level many people make him out to sound. But Malkin he's a different story he's going to be phenomanal, coming generations of hockey fans are going to be blessed with many years of Crosby, Ovechkin, and Malkin scoring highlight-reel goals!
Kovalchuck I think has more then proved all ready that he is a superstar, but think about the possibilities if he and Hossa actually had an all-star center between them!
I digress!! I think in the very near future that Stastny, Toews, Cogliano to name a couple are gonna be very talented players... For some reason I also like Lee Stempniak but he's never gonna be your leading scorer (well he maybe be but you'd be hurting if he was)...

I tend to just ignore New Jersey completely... they don't count

Didn't Wayne Gretzky refer to New Jersey as a Mickey Mouse Club back in the 80's...and I still believe they still are (minus Brodeur).

Shit man...you win 3 Cups and you carry the mickey mouse ears? What do you have to do to get recognized for greatness?

3 Cups in how many years? Yes including the Colorado Rockies. So if you look back to the inception of the Rockies in the 76-77 season and then relocating to New Jersey in the 82-83 season that is 3 cups in 31 years. I don't count that as greatness.

Why not include the Scouts too while you are at it? The reality is that this is a far different team than the crap of old. When you look back at the team since say, 1994, this is easily one of the most impressive franchises in all sports. 3 Stanley Cups, 4 Conference Championships, 7 Division Championships, and numerous other accolades that aren't really worth mentioning at the moment. Hate them all you want, but the reality is this is a good hockey team. And even if you look back to the 74 season, I'll still take the 3 Cups over what some other teams have been able to accomplish in that time.

Phantoms, I am not disputing that they are a good team cause they are. What I am disputing is that they aren't that great of a team. I mean you can't compare them to the Dynasty's of Montreal, NY Islanders, Edmonton Oilers. I believe that New Jersey would be next inline as the next good franchise along with Detroit and Pittsburgh of the 90's.
Yes they were good, but great, no, I don't think so.
