As far as I'm concerned, and some may call me a wimp for this, any shot to the head should be a penalty. I don't believe for a second that having a player like Scott Stevens land a shoulder on a guy's chin as he cut across the middle was a good thing for hockey. I just don't know how someone can feel good after knocking an opponent out cold with a hit. That's just my opinion though.

The only problem with this is that there is a great difference in height between some players.....if every hit that mad contact with the head were an auto-penalty, then it would severely restrict the taller players from making any contact at all....not to mention those players that get hit because they have their heads down. Imagine a Chara hit on Cammalleri, he's 9 inches shorter than Chara and if Chara makes contact with him, then there's even odds he may come in contact with his head.
I hate all the head-shots too, but its the intent that is key.....and to curb this disturbing trend, its going to have to be the League handing out lengthy suspensions.....
Maybe the suspension should match the number of games that the victim misses.....

Maybe the suspension should match the number of games that the victim misses..... i do see you're point about the difference in height and this is where it gets complicated. how do you determine intent though? it's a really tough issue. but you're right, it would have to be a hybrid of the severity of the hit and the (perceived) intent. i just don't like to see guys getting hit in the head so often with no repercussions. perhaps, the answer is removing the instigator rule. making the suspension as long as the number of games the victim misses just won't work. for example, suppose jarome iginla hits alex burrows from behind and injures burrows. the league then hands out a suspension that lasts until burrows plays another game. burrows, being a fourth line pain in the arse, but not an integral part of the canucks, ends up sitting out for a month while the flames play the canucks in the playoffs, all the while the canucks are ensuring that he doesn't play by having their doctors state that he is unfit to play even though he is in fact ok. another way this system wouldn't work is the other way around. alex burrows hits jarome iginla and injures him and receives this suspension. there is no deterent as burrows is a fringe player and has helped his team by knocking out a guy of iginla's stature.
