I watched a lot of the trade deadline coverage and I can't believe the Oilers moved Ryan Smyth. Though I won't complain, because now Nilsson will actually get a chance to play again since he's out of the Islanders messed up farm system and their obvious lack of confidence in him. I doubt Smyth re-signs with the Islanders, though...so this has cost them a lot for a Cup run.

I wasn't shocked to hear that KLowe traded Ryan Smyth. That was the smart thing to do.
What i have heard was that Ryan walked away from a 5 yr deal that would pay him $27.5M for those 5 yrs.

To lose Ryan Smyth is an absolute shocker. He was the face of this franchise and will now be playing in obscurity in Long Island. I really feel bad for all those die hard Oilers fans who always seem to lose their great players........Gretzky, Cujo, Weight, Pronger.......the list goes on and on.

I have been an Oiler fan for 27 years and like I mentioned before it didn't come as a shock.
Ryan balked at the $27.5M contract offer and demanded to get paid anywhere from $5.75-$6M/yr.
He basically turned his back on Edmonton and the Oilers.

If it true that he demanded that kind of salary...then i agree, he definitely turned his back on edmonton. And for all you flames fans out there...just wait 'til 08 when you lose iginla, kipper, regehr...
On a positive note, there is now 1 less mullet in edmonton!

I can see the Oilers actually helping out the Flames in the off-season by signing Brad Stuart as an UFA. The money they save by trading Smyth they can use to re-sign Sykora and sign Stuart to contracts.
Oilers lineup for 07/08
Horcoff - Sykora - Hemsky Torres - Stoll - Lupul Thoresen - Pouliot - Pisani Moreau - Reasoner - Stortini Winchester, Jacques
Stuart - Smid Smith - Staios Grebs - Hejda Gilbert, Greene
Roloson JDD/DD

Has anyone looked at the conspiracy angle yet?
What if the Oilers and Smyth looked at the benefits of pulling a Doug Weight move? The Oilers just picked up the Isles' 1st round choice in '03 (Nilsson), their 1st round choice in '05 (O'Marra) and their 1st round choice in '07. That's pretty decent return on a rental. Maybe, if both sides were close to a deal originally, they decided to make the club better for the long-term, and Smyth finds his contract waiting for him in the off-season. It's not like the Oilers were going to be a playoff team at this point anyway.

I want to believe that, but I have a hard time with it. All reports were that Smyth was laughing and joking on the ice and planning around the Messier gig before the game.
Noone to blame but Smyth and his agent. When money becomes more important than your loyalty, don't be surprised when hard decisions have to be made. It's upsetting because even as a Vancouver fan I loved Smyth.
