Is this not one of the strangest things that have taken place in the NHL is years. With Malkin going AWOL a week ago from his Russian team and now popping up in L.A. with his player agents. It reminds me of the old Soviet Union days when players like Alexander Mogilny had to sneak out of the country just to play in the NHL......................Bizarre or what. I wonder if the Penguins will have to pay some sort of penalty the Russian hockey federation or perhaps even his old team the Magnitogorsk.

Why would the Penguins pay? The Russian teams have shot themselves in the foot by not setting up transfer agreements with the NHL (getting greedy and holding out for more handout money)....without the transfer agreements, I would assume that players from Russia can do what they please as far as playing outside of Russia. I also read that under Russian law, Malkin can give 2 weeks notice and be clear of his contract.

Yes he can give 2 weeks notice to quit his "job".....my point is that he took off from his club about a week before he gave his notice to the team. It's also clear that either Malkin's agents and/or the Penguins organization had a hand in helping him get back to the U.S.
All I'm really saying is that is reminds me of the Old Soviet Union where players had to sneak out of the country in order to play out their careers in the NHL.
I'm sure this is not the end of this story and you can be sure that the Russian Hockey Federation will be filing some sort of lawsuit.

Whom are they going to sue? I don't think the Penguins are liable, as there is no transfer agreement being breeched. If they want to sue Malkin for the 2 weeks, then he should easily be able to pay that to his old club once he begins play in North America. I think the Russian club should just accept that they were messing with Malkin's career and they got burned....maybe this will open their eyers to the need for a transfer agreement with the NHL that doesn't try to hold their talent for ransom.
