I realize that Luongo is probably one of the top 3 goalies in the NHL, but am I the only one surprised by how much money this guy got from the Vancouver Canucks for his 4 year deal. 1st year - 6 million 2nd year - 6.5 million 3rd year - 7 million 4th year - 7.5 million
Wow...........that's a lot of cash for a guy that's never been to the playoffs before!

Just goes to show how much they believe in him as their goalie and how willing they were to pay to keep him there. I figured he'd be getting a huge deal from the Canucks, but not as big as they ended up giving him...average of 6.75 million per year over 4 years...his not being in the playoffs before has more to do with the crappy teams he's had to backstop...but with a few more pieces, the Canucks could be playoff bound this coming season.
And just think how great it would be for him to be the starting goalie for Team Canada at the 2010 Olympics, in Vancouver...home town crowd and all.

They never would have made the trade if they weren't certain to do what was necessary to keep him.

It's money well spent. This is a guy who broke the record for Most Shots Faced In a Season a few years back (something re-tarded like almost 40 per game average). And still ended up with a Save% over 0.925!!! He got screwed out of a Vezina because Brodeur had "earned it over the course of his career" (and I'm a Devils fan saying this)... Is there a position more important in hockey (especially for the Cloutier-cursed Canuckleheads)? If you were building (note, I say BUILDING) a franchise, would there be ANY goalie you would take over him (maaayyybeee Lehtonen)?
Playoff worries? How about Team Canada squads for a dozen years... I have faith that he will step up to whatever pressures he will face.
Money VERY well spent. Simply put, Luongo will singlehandedly win more games than Naslund, Ohlund, Salo, and the Sedins combined.

It is enough to make me sish I was still living in Vancouver so that I could attend a game or two....I think I may be staying up late to watch a few more Canucks games this year. ;D

I think it's the best move they could have done. In the off-season it sounded like they were going to lose him, so they had to make him an offer he couldn't refuse, and with the few goaltenders that are available for trade out there, you have to keep talent when you get it. With losing Jovanovski and being pretty weak on defense - besides that crappy Ohlund, who in my opinion is no more than a 2nd line D-man, they had to shore up their goaltending for many years. He's the best goalie they've had since Kirk Mclean!!! Now if Kesler would start earning his 1.9 mil, they might be more than a 1 line team. I've been to see the Canucks twice already this year here in Edmonton hoping to see Luongo play, and have been screwed both times! They played Wade f*gerty the first time and some 3rd stringer named brahjdsfhdopon - or something like that.

They pretty much let Jovanovski go because they needed the cap space to sign Luongo. Teams don't get very far in this NHL without great goaltending....now they just need to get themselves a RW and maybe another top 4 D-man.

A RW and a top 4 D-man was what the Canucks gave up to get Luongo

A RW and a top 4 D-man was what the Canucks gave up to get Luongo Its not really that simple though. Bertuzzi was not going to succeed in Vancouver again. At all. I'm afraid thats simply the case and he had to be moved. Bryan Allen was starting to come together and slowly into his own but still had not moved anywhere near his expected potential. Auld was the move that hurt, but of course Luongo offset that a bit When you consider Krajicek and Allen as a wash (I've been VERY pleasantly surprised with Krajicek), Bertuzzi is a free agent at the end of this season and is already saying he's considering going BACK to Vancouver or Phoenix, this really seems like a straight out win for the Canucks. Its nice to see Jovanovski start to pull it together finally too. He deserves a full season of success finally.
