Being and Edmonton Oiler fan, I am still in shock that the Oilers won the draft lottery last night. Personally, I had a feeling that Toronto was going to win it, just because of McDavid. I guess the hockey gods did shine down on the Oilers organization last night.
With that being said, Edmonton still have plenty of holes to fill. First and foremost a legit starting goalie, then 2 top 4 defense. The team doesn't need any more high end talent up front, so let's play fantasy GM.
What would a package look like if the Oilers decided to trade the pick?
The team that stands out for me is Tampa Bay. Not because of Stamkos (UFA after next season), but for the likes of Drouin, Hedman, Namestnikov and Vasilevskiy. Would a trade of Drouin, Hedman and Vasilevskiy be enough for Edmonton to think about trading the 1st overall, or is it too steep for Tampa. Remember, they would have to re-sign Stamkos after next season, and they are in cap trouble. Imagine a combo of Stamkos and McDavid for the next 10 years. Everyone was drooling over Drouin and Stamkos, but McDavid and Stamkos is unreal.
On the other hand, if Edmonton does keep the 1st overall pick, their top 6 in the next couple of years (without taking trades into account) would look like this
Hall - McDavid - Yakupov
Draisaitl - RNH - Eberle
Also, having McDavid, Hall, Yakupov, Draisaitl, RNH and Eberle up front and with Klefbom, Marincin and Nurse on the backend, would that make it easier for them to sign a legit starting goalie along with 2 top 4 dmen to help them into the play-offs?
