Just a suggestion for next season.
Each team will have the option of selecting one Franchise Player on their team under the following regulations:
-The fee for designating a franchise player is $5.000.000 per year. -The franchise player tag will last for the duration of contract the player is either signing or already signed to. -Teams can only lose their franchise player through trades, retirement or by buying out his contract. -A traded franchise player will lose his status as a franchise player. -A team that trades their franchise player will have to pay a fee of $5.000.000 as compensation to the player. -The player will also not agree to return to a team managed by his current GM for the duration of his contract or at least 12 months. -The teams line-up will also suffer a drop in team morale as a result of the trade of their franchise player. -A team that has traded its franchise player may not name a new one until after the July 1st signing deadline has passed. -Franchise players will retain a C1-RFA Status at all times. -A re-signing franchise player will always receive the Agent's suggested salary for the total number of years offered.

I'm certainly willing to discuss some rule changes with respect to 'Franchise Tags' but I would also prefer to keep things fairly simple without having to many clauses, as they can make things very confusing for any future GM's that join the league.

I can understand not wanting to make it confusing, but only being able to franchise a player every 2 years sucks. The thing I like about what I suggested is the finances involved in franchising. Makes GM's think twice before franchising a player. What about the suggestion that if you trade your franchise player, you can't name another one until after the July 1st signing period has passed?

The point of the Franchise Tag in its current form is to force some tough decisions. It also facilitates some interesting free agency, seeing as how we have RFA terms that are very generous to the GMs.

as much as i hate having to use a tag on dean mcammond and then having to lose vokoun the next year just so i can keep someone like demitra around, the rule is fair.

I prefer to keep the rule as is. Wouldn't want to have the option in any way that allows me to keep Lidstrom and Brodeur after the year. That's just silly
