I am stunned. This is the absolute last thing I thought would ever happen. My mind tells me that he can not possibly fit into the team because of his lack of good defensive play, but my heart hopes this brings a 4th Cup to NJ.

I don't know how much this improves Jersey really... it at least gives them a healthy and frightening scoring threat. Who's he gonne play with though? Pad Parise's stats a little? We don't even know if Kovalchuck know's what the playoffs are let alone if he can preform in them! And it's brutal to think but Oduya was one of their best defenceman, on what was an already questionable defence....

Kovalchuk isn't going to pad Parise's stats.....they're both left wings.
I suppose this means that Elias will be centering one of the top 2 lines and Zajac the other.
It doesn't seem like an overpayment by Jersey at all, especially considering they can flip his rights for something prior to free agency if they want.
For some reason though, I feel the Toronto trade for Phaneuf is a better deal (and I'm not really a fan of Celine). Jersey may have been better off adding someone like him.

Does Kovalchuk play on the 2nd unit then? Is he gonna be game for that?
Hahah first time I've ever post on the message board during lunch break....

What's questionable about the best defense in the league? Haven't had our best defenseman all season long and are the top dog in the NHL. Oduya was underperforming, hence his constant place on the Devils 3rd pairing, and Bergfors, after a decent start, has been on the checking line for almost a month now. I think it's a solid return for both parties, considering, but yes Lou is looking at this as a rental, at least for now. He has already come out on record and stated he has no interest in discussing signing Kovalchuk long term until both parties have gotten used to eachother. I think the key here is NJ needed something extra to add to the offense for when Martin, Elias, and Clarkson return. I agree with Chris that Elias will go back to center and I expect Rolston to be the 3rd body on the so-called second line. This will allow Lemaire to reunite the ZZPops line full time.
Can't wait to see how this deal works out in a couple months.

This is anything but a desperate move on the part of Lamoureillo. In fact, this was a brilliant trade by one of the best GM's in the league. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a New Jersey fan, but I do respect Lamoureillo for constantly trying to give his team a fighting chance at a cup.
The fact is Lamoureillo, significantly improved his hockey team with the addition of Kovalchuk, without giving anything up of significant value. Not only that, but by trading for Kovalchuk, he prevented Atlanta from moving him to a possible playoff rival such as Boston, Philadephia, Washington, etc...

Despite Marks claim that the Devils have the best defense, he has Brodeur to thank for that lol. They paid a lot in some ways, but in other ways, the Thrashers should've gotten more for him; in fact, they could've gotten more lol. But ah well. And NJ can't trade Kovy for crap, isn't he a UFA? no one would want his rights if that's the case... I'd still put NJ in the top 7 as a favorite for the Cup... but not the favorite at all. But good luck Why did the thrashers add the extra player and switch 2nds too though? Haha, the Thrashers 2nd will be much better than the Devils 2nd.

I think it was a good move for Lou to pick up Kovalchuk for Atlanta, as it gives him some solid scorers for a playoff run.
I'm not sure if he will really fit in with their defense first system and I'm positive that he won't sign a new contract with the Devils. Maybe he'll end up in the KHL next season.

Are you that ignorant to think that the Devils are so good defensively just because of Brodeur? This is a team that is consistently towards the top of the league defensively and didn't skip a beat even when Brodeur was out for 50 some odd games last season. Do you even for a second think that Clemmensen is a half decent goaltender? I don't think so. Yet that tool stepped in and still won a bunch of games as the Devils went on to secure yet another division championship in the tough Atlantic Division. The reason they are so good defensively is the system, and the fact that Lou goes out and finds guys who work hard and buy into the team. Does Kovalchuk fit that mold, perhaps not. I never looked at him as a complete player, but he doesn't need to be overly effective in his own end when the team is already very capable in its own zone. I think when Ilya has a chance to see what this team is all about he'll enjoy the fact that it's all about winning all the time and he'll want to stay. Will he resign...who cares? All that matters is this team is a real threat for the Cup again. I can see the 4th finally arriving in Jersey.

So I guess what Mark is saying is that Marty Brodeur isn't actually one of the best goalies ever. He is just the fortunate guy who gets to stand in net for New Jersey.
