I thought it would be interested to get eveyones opinions on what will happen to their NHL team this off season....
I'll do my home team...the Dallas Stars.
Needs: More than anything a winger to play with Richards & Eriksson. Ideally one that is defensively responsible with some offensive upside. Brian Rolston would be ideal imo.
Nice to have: A 3rd liner with a better offensive upside than Ott to play with Modano. Hagman would be ideal but I doubt that will happen.
Another nice to have would be a vet backup for Turco in case Stephens isn't ready for extended duty.
UFA's....
Stu Barnes: Still having concussion symptoms. Says if he plays anywhere it will be Dallas. Considering his age, I think he'll retire.
Mattias Norstrom: Also considering retirement and says if he plays anywhere it will be Dallas. I wouldn't mind having him back for one more season to mentor Grossman and Fistric for a full season, if he'll sign for less money. Either way, I don't see the Stars adding any additional defensmen. For this analysis, I'll assume that he retires.
Niklas Hagman: Will leave via free agency. With his offensive upside that he showed this season, he'll want more money than the Stars will shell out.
Antti Miettenen: Also gone via Free agency. Had a good year also (for him at least). He had some good chemistry with Ribs and Morrow but the Star shuffle lines too much for that to be his only upside.
Johan Holmqvist: Cya. Nuff said.
Brad Winchester: They may or may not resign him but with Peterson, Barch and Conner all locked up, the Stars don't really need another 4th liner.
Lines would be as follows...
FORWARDS Morrow- Ribiero- Lehtinen Eriksson- Richards- ? Ott- Modano- Brunnstrom Barch-Peterson-Lundqvist
Scratches/Call Ups Conner, Neal, Puskarev
DEFENSE Zubov- Niskanen Boucher- Robidas Daley- Grossman
Scratches/Call ups Fistric, Jancevski
GOALIE Turco Stephens

The only thing I see differently with Dallas, is that I think the spot on Richards' wing is Brunnstrom's to lose in camp.
This is dependant on not signing a top 6 forward in the FA period, but I think part of the reason Brunnstrom signed with Dallas was for the opportunity to get a shot at that position.

I'd agree actually that he has a shot at Richards wing but regardless Dallas still needs another top 6 forward...even if Brunnstrom pans out and hangs on to a top 6 winger job they still need another guy that could fill that role in case someone slumps or gets injured.

Minnesota Wild:
Front office needs a shake up, as the whole organization has been in a stalemate (not to be confused with consistency, or stability).
Risebrough, in his tenure with the club has either been too conservative, unable to add the necessary pieces, or unwise, adding band-aid fixes to the club.
There were instances (publicly admitted by the players) when Lemaire was tuned out by the team, which could be an indication that his tactics might be time-sensitive and his expiration is soon to follow (or so I hope).
In terms of on-ice personnel, the team needs more gritty forwards, as simple as that. Out of top-six forwards, only Koivu is willing to take a hit and drive the net. Not much success could be had with that sort of a makeup. Gaborik has one year left on his contract, and I fully expect him to pick up his stuff and run, once he is given an opportunity. I see 0 chances of him resigning. Soon, there will be another chapter in the history of the MN Wild, as its franchise player will depart, and soon afterwards, majority of the front-office.

Riser is turning out to be quite the $hitty GM, known for band-aid solutions, as well as moves that call for head-scratching.
There seems to be some disconnect between the coaching and the management. Riser gets Lemaire players that aren't his type, consistently.
Domninic Moore got here via trade. Jacques knew nothing about the player, and what he learned, he didn't like. Moore didn't play, then was waived (I think). Simon came, didn't play much.
Now MAB-- I just don't see him playing much, as he won't be given any even strength time, at least not with his current style of play. 3rd round for a 7 minute of ice time player that will last 1 year? Bad decision, I think.

Majority of you know I am an Oilers fan so this might be a very long post as I will do what I can to break everything down.
At season's end, the Oilers had 4 main guys out due to injury (Raffi Torres, Shawn Horcoff, Ethan Moreau and Sheldon Souray). The trio of young guns (Nilsson, Cogliano and Gagner) stepped up and brought the team close to 8th seed (4pts out I believe).
Now to offseason.
Line up at this moment in time.
Penner-Horcoff-Hemsky Nilsson-Gagner-Cogliano Moreau-Stoll-Pisani Glencross-Brodziak-Stortini Torres, Pouliot
Souray-Gilbert Pitkanen-Grebeshkov Staios-Smid Greene
Garon Roloson Deslauriers
Restriced Free Agents: Marc Pouliot (unsigned) Denis Grebeshkov (signed) Tom Gilbert (signed) Jarret Stoll (unsigned) Zach Stortini (unsigned) J.F. Jacques (unsigned) Jeff Deslauriers (unsigned) Joni Pitkanen (unsigned)
Unrestricted Free Agents: Curtis Glencross (getting close on a new contract, he is down to $1.5M and Oilers are offering $1.1M) Marty Reasoner (unsigned) Geoff Sanderson (unsigned)
What KLowe said in the media.
On Glencross "We need to know what is going on with Glencross so we can move ahead come draft day."
On moving up in the draft "We are looking to move into the top 10 this year at the draft."
On Pitkanen's demands "If we can't reach an agreement with Pitkanen by July 1, we will see if he gets offered an OS and will look at the offer and will decide if it too much to match and if it is, we will take the picks"
On too much depth "We are looking to make a 2 for 1 or a 3 for 1 deal, or a deal that would see us acquire picks for the 08 draft"
Now my take on things
Everyone say the Oilers have too many NHL ready forwards, but for me I don't believe that is the case. For how injury prone the Oilers are I would rather have 2 or 3 NHL ready forwards in the pressbox come opening night. With that said, Oiler fans know how much of a man crush MacT has with Reasoner (Joe Sakic). MacT wants him back but Lowe says he has to look at what the plans are for him before talking contract. For me that means that Reasoner is walking for free (no big loss). Moreau, well I am counting on him being injured once again so we need an NHL ready forward to fill in the spot (I will come back to this in a bit).
Lowe mentioned that he wants to have Glencross locked up or know that they exhausted all avenues to a new contract before the draft. By this it comes down to Glencross or Raffi Torres (1 of them is gone) by Lowe's messege. For me though, I would keep both, a line of Torres-Brodziak-Glencross would be a very good 4th line, and when Moreau gets hurt Torres steps into the 3rd line.
Lowe also mentioned that he would look at a package deal that would see the Oilers acquire a top 6 forward for the price of 2 or 3 players. Which players, who knows. If Glencross is signed then Torres could be part of the package. If Pitkanen can't come to an agreement his rights could be also part of the package. Schremp (good possibility), is that enough to move up into the top 10 or even top 5 (I believe so) All 3 players are former 1st rounders, and Torres and Pitkanen are top 5.
The Oilers will be having 3 goalies come start of the season on the club as Deslauriers has to clear waivers to be sent down. Does this mean Roloson is on the way out (a draft pick in the upcoming draft) and it is a known fact the Roloson still wants to start. I also heard that Washington might not be set on resigning Huet. HMMM.
As for the Top 6 forward, why mess with a good thing. Unless you are talking about signing Perry (who is going to be unsigned by July 1st) or take a chance on (God I hate to say it) Jaromir Jagr. Do the Oilers need a top 6 forward? NO. That is why they got Penner right.
So with all said and done. As a fan I say stay right where you are, no trading unless it only benefits the Oilers (hahaha), and go with what we have, I mean I would have a roster that looks like this
Penner-Horcoff-Hemsky Nilsson-Gagner-Cogliano Moreau-Stoll-Pisani Torres-Brodziak-Glencross Pouliot, Stortini
Souray-Gilbert Pitkanen-Grebeshkov Staios-Smid Greene
Garon Roloson Deslauriers
Than a lineup that looks like
Penner-Horcoff-UFA/RFA Nilsson-Gagner-Hemsky Moreau-Stoll-Cogliano Glencross/Torres-Brodziak-Pisani Pouliot, Stortini
Souray-Gilbert Grebeshkov-Smid Staios-Greene Roy
Garon Deslauriers
We have depth and I do believe that is a good thing, but to deplete the roster like Lowe is talking about, would be a bad thing considering how many injury prone players the Oilers have on the team.
Just my $0.02 as an Oiler fan.

Toronto Maple Leafs
I realize that many GM's in this league absolutely hate the Maple Leafs, I am not one of them. I have been a long time fan and will continue to be regardless of their performance on the ice. I'm not quite sure what attracts me to this franchise but for one reason or another I can't help but follow them year in and year out. My greatest memories of the Leafs when during the 92-93 playoffs when they defeated Detroit and then St. Louis before finally falling to L.A. in the Conference finals. That team had the most heart and desire of any Leaf team that I've seen with guys like Gilmour, Clark, Andreychuk, Anderson, Ellett, Gill, Potvin, etc..
We jump to today and see a Leafs organization that is in desperate need of repair for both the present and future. Cliff Fletcher has started the overhaul by buying out Darcy Tucker and Andrew Raycroft as well as parting ways with Kyle Wellwood. Next year will see a much younger team on the ice then in years past and I figure the leafs will contend for a lottery pick in the draft giving them the chance to draft either Tavares or maybe even Victor Hedman. Regardless, the Leafs need to suck for the next few years in order to build up a talent pool of young players which will help them down the road.
I also predict the following things: 1. Mats Sundin will not be back with the Leafs for next season. 2. Brian Burke, although not my first choice will be the GM of the Leafs by this point next year. All the pieces seem to be falling into place for this outcome. 3. Joe Nieuwendyk will be hired by the organization at some point this summer and added to the hockey department. 4. Bryan McCabe will not start this upcoming season as part of the team.
Regardless of what changes take place over the next season, or for that matter the next few seasons, it will be a long slow process of turning this team around in the right direction.

I don't get it to be honest... unless he has career years in points every year untill his contract is up he will never be worth that money too me. All I see this doing is cutting back playing time for Ott... which upsets me greatly. I would have rather spent that money on resigning Hagman....

i agree resignin hagman for less money and basically the same about of points (maybe more) would have been smart for the stars but avery brings stuff to the game that u love to watch if he is on your team...i think u will be happy with the signing...at least for the first season

But I will never be ok with how much money he makes considering we just let a player who has yet to reach his prime walk for less money.
